Firefighters in The Colony, Texas responded to an blaze on Gibson Drive three days after Gov. Greg Abbott declared the state of emergency following wildfires that raged across the entire state.
The fire started at about 2:00 am in The Colony at a home on Gibson Drive, then spread to a second house and detached garage at a third house. WFAA reports that despite no reported injuries, four alarms have been triggered in order to get help to control the fires. This was due to high winds and temperatures. The alarms were responded to by five agencies.
The Fire Department is investigating to see if The Colony fire was wildfire.
Abbott declared a disaster, stating that “wildfires which started on 24 July 2023 pose an immediate threat to widespread or serious damage, injury or loss of property or life in nearly 200 counties across the entire state.” Burn bans were issued in several counties to help prevent the start of wildfires. All state resources are available to fight this threat.
The number of wildfires this year is lower than it was in 2022. However, Texas A&M Forest Service officials say that consecutive triple-digit weather days combined with the lack rain and winds created ideal conditions for the fires to grow and spread.
According to the Texas A&M Forest Service’s Lead Public Information Officer, Community Impact, on such days, fire behavior is more extreme: intense, active fires.
Residents should prepare ahead of time to safeguard their homes and to make plans for evacuation to stop wildfires spreading.
