In response to storm damage at Marana High School, Marana Unified issued a press release on Thursday.

Staff and families of Marana High

Marana High School storm damage update.

We are grateful for the safety of all students and staff during this storm that occurred at dismissal. The students were calm, attentive, and listened to instructions. After school, teachers and staff were on hand for several hours after the end of classes to ensure that students had food and water. It is with great pleasure that we can report all district students who used the transportation system made it safely home.

Students should be able to return safely to campus on Monday, August 21, we anticipate. The power has not yet been restored on the campus, but it is expected to be restored by this evening.

The damage on campus has been extensive despite the efforts of staff to clean it. The majority of the damage was done outdoors, where fences and athletic fields had been blown over. We are still evaluating the extent of turf damage, but we hope that some of it can be salvaged from the wind blowing up the new turf that had just been laid.

In addition, the Tiger Cub Learning Center at MHS sustained significant damage. The area around the school was inundated, and the roof tiles were ripped off. The playground fence was also ripped down.

Several large shade trees and saguaro cacti were blown down on campus and greenhouses and outbuildings were destroyed.

In addition to shattered windows on vehicles of students and staff yesterday afternoon, solar panels on the parking lot suffered significant damage. A bus parked without anyone on board had its windows blown out as well. Please do not park under them at this time, students, visitors, and staff.

The football season will not be delayed due to damage to the fields. It is possible that games will be held at alternative venues. Once the schedules are confirmed, we will provide more details.

We are grateful for all the support and encouragement we received from alumni, community, parents and students. Our Tiger Staff rallied to assist in this difficult situation that happened without notice. New information will be shared with the community as it becomes available.
