Idalia made landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast Wednesday morning as a major Category 3 hurricane. The storm then descended to tropical storm status before it moved through Georgia this evening and hit South Carolina.

Idalia, a tropical storm, was downgraded Wednesday afternoon. It reached South Carolina at 8 pm with winds sustained of 65 mph.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that a 40-year old man from Florida, who hasn’t been identified publicly, was found dead early Wednesday morning in Pasco County, north of Tampa, after losing his control of the vehicle while driving during the hurricane.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers confirmed that a 59 year-old Gainesville man was killed Wednesday, after veering off the road and striking a tree, according to local ABC affiliate WCJR.

Mike Carballa, the administrator of Pasco County, Florida (north of Tampa) told CNN on Wednesday that between 4,000 and 6,000 homes were damaged with up to five feet of floodwater that inundated the area on Wednesday, while in Manatee County–south of St. Petersburg–officials estimate damage is upwards of $2 million.

In Leon County, Florida, at least 16 structures were damaged and there are 46 road blocks.

Photos and videos of the hurricane show the widespread coastal flooding caused by the storm. The storm inundated runways at Tampa International Airport and damaged roofs in Perry, Florida. It also flooded major highways, toppled trees, and ripped apart homes and storefronts along the Gulf Coast.

A strange event occurred when a storm surge generated by Idalia reversed Florida’s Steinhatchee River. The intense wave ripped sailboats off their moorings, and drove them upriver where they were thrown against a bridge, breaking their masts.

Idalia also caused havoc to storefronts, mobile homes and an explosion of an electrical transformer in Valdosta (Georgia) as it crossed the border into Georgia.

Casey DeSantis, the wife of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, posted a to X (formerly Twitter). Ron DeSantis said the storm knocked down a 100 year old oak tree on the Governor’s Mansion in Tallahassee. He added that no one was injured in the incident.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D), , urged coastal residents to make emergency supplies and pay attention to warnings.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis , on the other hand, asked residents to not loot the property in the wake of Hurricane Michael. He warned in a news conference that people have the right to protect their own properties and that they “have a legal right to do so.”
