One community came together in a gesture of support and gratitude to honor a hero. Freddy Jimenezdejesus was a proud U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and Albany native who supported his country. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, he faced financial difficulties that were insurmountable.
His story was transformed when Pinnacle Roofing, in partnership with Owens Corning, and Habitat for Humanity Capital District embarked upon a mission that would provide Jimenezdejesus more than a roof. It became a sign of unity, hope and unwavering commitment.
Jimenezdejesus enlisted into the Marine Corps immediately after graduating from high school. His motivation, he says, was to serve and protect his nation and the Constitution that gave him so much. He dedicated four years to his cause and embodied the Marines’ spirit of service. When his service ended, however, the new chapter was filled with unexpected challenges.
Freddy’s girlfriend and many others were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. While unemployment offered some temporary relief, the solution was not sustainable. They found themselves in an unstable financial position as unemployment benefits decreased and employment opportunities were scarce. They were in a period of financial uncertainty as they spent their savings to get by.
Freddy explained, “It’s not as if we didn’t really have the money to make it.” We’re short. This is $15,000, I’m sure. We’re going through a tough time right now. Many people cannot afford to pay that much money.
Pinnacle Roofing of Albany, a roofing company, teamed up with Owens Corning and Habitat for Humanity Capital District in order to change Freddy’s fate. The collaborative effort wasn’t just about fixing a roof, it was also about rebuilding lives and giving Freddy hope.
Gregory Musk, Pinnacle Roofing Inc.’s site supervisor said: “There are a few organizations here who give back to veterans that have given a great deal of their time and effort to protect us.” This is our way of giving back and helping them in whatever we can. We’re providing gutters, chimney masonry, and a new roofing system.
Owens Corning provided the roofing material, and Pinnacle Roofing donated their time. All local businesses contributed.
Jimenezdejesus stated, “A program such as this will save us money in the future.” We don’t need to replace the slate. The whole roof will not need to be replaced. It’s definitely a life changing event.
Jimenezdejesus was reminded of the Marine Corps as he watched this dedicated team work so tirelessly.
He said, “It is at least 100° out there.” I know that these guys work very hard. Marine, when I saw that they were working I told them, “We can’t just stand by and watch.” The fight is on. “I wanted to join them when I saw their work.”
This project represents more than just roof repairs; it is a symbol of the support that community has for veterans such as Freddy, and their families.
