According to the Ministry of Justice 275 Colombia Battalion No.3 members are currently in the Sinai Peninsula
Hamas’ attack on Israeli soil has stunned much of the globe. The country has also heard of several Colombians stranded on Middle Eastern soil in the middle of an upsurge of violence, which is putting more than 200 Colombian troops in Sinai in high alert.
The Israeli Ministry of Health has confirmed that more than 1,000 people have been killed in the terror attack, which saw more than 5,500 rockets launched by the Gaza Strip at Israel. This is what prompted the Israeli state to declare war.
In retaliation, a blockade was imposed on the Gaza Strip, leaving the area that belongs to Israel, Palestine, and Jordan, without fuel, electricity or food.
More than 200 Colombian troops in the Sinai Peninsula – a region between Israel and Egypt protected by the Multilateral Peace and Observer Force – are on alert due to the new violence that has erupted in the Middle East. The MFO is the guarantor for peace between Israel and Egypt.
Since 1982, Colombia collaborates with MFO through the uniformed officers of the Colombia Battalion No.3 which, in February 2023 according to Ministry of Justice, consisted of 275 individuals. The general director visited Colombia on that date to meet with Laura Gil, vice-minister of Multilateral Affairs at the Foreign Ministry.
The Ministry of Justice states that the Colombian Military Forces are responsible for supporting and coordinating stability in the Sinai region. They also represent the Colombian Military Forces’ strengthening in peace operations and procedures.
The mission also includes the verification of the compliance with peace agreements between Egypt and Israel, signed in 1978. The mission includes protection and custody over the land that these two nations have fought on for 30 years.
The FM said that despite being in a non-offensive area, they remain vigilant.
The battalion is in constant contact with the Military Forces offices in Colombia, and they haven’t reported anything yet. In the Middle East there are personnel that were a part of troop rotations every six months on the Sinai Peninsula.
The Israeli ambassador in Colombia has thanked him for his support.
Gali Dagan, the Colombian ambassador to this country thanked him on Facebook for his support of Israel.
The message below was recorded following a sit-in that took place at the Israeli Embassy in the afternoon on October 9, in support of the country. Around 60 people attended, dressed in white tee-shirts with flags representing the nation which was attacked by terrorists.
The graffiti painted on this spot the night of the 7th October was also removed by the citizens.
Today was an emotional day. Especially when friends of Israel from Colombia arrived at @IsraelinCol to remove the embarrassing graffiti that had been left behind by vandals against our embassy. Gali Dagan sent a message that included the words “Thank you for everything”.
