The fire Saturday caused extensive smoke damage and fire to The Mad Taco, a Montpelier drinking hole that has been around for many years. Investigators from the state fire marshal were at the scene on Sunday morning.
Montpelier Fire Department’s local 2287 reported on Facebook that a late-night fire on Saturday had caused “significant water and fire damage” at The Mad Taco on Main Street, and the building adjacent to it. The fire displaced five tenants, though no injuries were reported.
According to a post by the union of firefighters, firemen were at the scene in “under a minute” after receiving te call. Mad Taco’s is directly across from the headquarters of the Fire Department.
The fire occurred just one week following The Mad Taco’s celebration of its re-opening in Montpelier after July’s floods. A Facebook update on Oct. 22, posted by the restaurant, declared that “It is good to be home.” After the flooding in July, rebuilding our Montpelier store was a major undertaking. But we’re finally open, with a better, newly-remodeled shop.
The photos from the fire show heavy smoke and black plumes rising above the front façade of the restaurant. Crews were on alert throughout the night, but declared that the fire had been brought under control after about two hours. According to the Post, ten neighboring first responders and fire departments provided mutual assistance.
The interior of The Mad Taco was heavily damaged on Sunday morning as Montpelier’s Fire Chief, Robert Gowans and investigators with the State’s Fire Marshal’s Office worked to identify the cause of the fire. A fire truck was parked in front of the building and a group of firefighters were standing on the sidewalk.
The fire spread to the old wooden building next door.
The fire started at “Charlie-O’s World Famous,” a watering hole in downtown that is a local favorite and bills itself as ‘A Dive for Nice People’. It had suffered heavy damages from July’s flooding, but it was open for business again when the fire began.
As many downtown Montpelier businesses work on reopening after the flooding, a fire broke out. Residents surveyed the damages at the scene of the fire on Sunday. A post made on the page of the union for firefighters summed what locals were feeling. “Montpelier just can’t get a break!” Sad.”
The owner of The Mad Taco could not be reached Sunday morning. Also, The Mad Taco has restaurants in Waitsfield and Middlebury. The Facebook page which celebrated the reopening of the Montpelier Restaurant just one week earlier now notes that the restaurant is “temporarily” closed.
