The first floor of the Vistas Apartment Complex, which is located at Fredericksburg St., adjacent to San Jacinto Hall and on Fredericksburg St., was flooded around 12 pm on October 26.
Ifueko, a junior in exercise and sports sciences who lives at the Vistas on the 1st floor, says that initially her room just leaked, but the water soon filled up the entire room.
Uwaifo said, “I look around me and see a few drops.” Then, a few drops became my entire room (flooding).
Ava Stewart is a junior theatre performer who lives in the Vistas on the 5th floor. She had the same experience.
Stewart stated, “There’s water on the carpet and all over my floor.” Stewart said, “I pulled out my drawers that contained my clothes from under my mattress and found water everywhere.”
Uwaifo said that she was able to keep her belongings dry, but Stewart is worried about mold growth.
Uwaifo stated that the electrical hazards in water made her feel uneasy.
Uwaifo stated, “The smoke detectors continue to go off.” The lights aren’t working in my bedroom and even after they had cleaned the floors, water was still running.
Uwaifo claims that the fire department showed up at the Vistas, but not her apartment.
Stewart reported that after calling front desk to ask for clarification, the staff returned her call a couple of hours later and placed her on the list.
Stewart stated that “maybe an hour or so after the [call] somebody showed up.” They moved everything from underneath the bed, used the water sensor and reported that [water] had come through the baseboards. Then they said someone would call me or bring a fan.
Uwaifo reported that maintenance had brought a vacuum cleaner and mop to remove the water from the floor. It would take a couple of days for the roof to be repaired.
Residents do not yet know what Vistas plans to do in response to the flooding.
Stewart stated that “[Management] treated it as a matter of fact.” There wasn’t a permanent or satisfactory solution. Is it likely that the issue will occur again next time rain falls?
Residents have not received any updates from Vistas since October 27th, other than an Instagram post.
We are currently assessing the damage caused by the excess rain. The elevator 1 is currently out of service. “Please be patient during maintenance”, the Instagram post said.
Vistas Management declined to make any comments. Lucciana Chhoueiry is a Vistas resident and a reporter for this article. Residents of the Vistas sent maintenance requests to The University Star. We will update this story when we have more information.
