Philip Jones’ wife is terrified, but has feelings for her husband
The husband of a sick wife damaged her locked bedroom door with a breezeblock. Philip Jones told his 37-year wife that he only wanted to be friendly.
The couple had separated bedrooms because their marriage was in a bad state and the woman was sick. The court heard that she was afraid of defendant who has already been charged with affray.
Jones of Endsleigh Road in Old Colwyn (Colwyn Bay) admitted assaulting her the night before the incident with the breeze block and criminally damaging the door. The judge sentenced Jones to one month in prison for assaulting her and activated the six-month suspended jail term after an earlier incident. This made a total of seven months.
David Mainstone, the prosecutor at Caernarfon Crown Court told them that Jones and his spouse had been married 37 years. They had four children. Last year, Mrs Jones fell seriously ill and Mr Jones turned to drinking.
The court was told that they slept apart and the bedroom door of hers had been locked as he could become aggressive. The court heard Mrs Jones’ husband banging her bedroom door on the evening of 7 October.
She opened the door because she was scared he’d smash it down. He stood there with a breezeblock.
He said that he wouldn’t hurt her. He got in her bed after walking past her. She called the police in a panic.
Soon after, officers arrested Jones. He confessed to drinking and trying to open the door with the breezeblock. He admitted to having PTSD, and that his wife has still strong feelings towards him.
John Wyn Williams stated that his client was a plasterer who had lost his dad to cancer. His marriage also “fell apart”, according to the lawyer. The man has been given professional advice but has not taken it.
Judge Timothy Petts said that the defendant had never been in trouble before, but alcohol seemed to “take a hold” on him. He was given a 6-month sentence in September for assault and his behavior towards the police. However, it had been suspended for 2 years.
The same judge today jailed Jones one month in prison for the most recent incident with Mrs Jones, and activated the suspended sentence. The sentence must be served consecutively, so the total time he spends in jail will be seven months.
No separate punishment was imposed for criminally damaging the door. Jones was also prohibited from contacting Jones’ wife for 10 months by the judge.
