It was powerful enough to send the staircase rolling down the runway. The tornado also damaged ceilings, walls, and conveyor belts. A total of 16 Aerolineas Argentinas vessels were not in service. Situation is slowly normalizing

The AMBA began operations at 8 am after the storm hit this morning, causing cancellations, delays, and re-schedulings of flights to Ezeiza, Aeroparque and other locations.

The Ministerio Pistarini Airport was back in operation at the time. However, it took an hour for the Jorge Newbery Airport to reopen due to greater damages and the breakdown of 16 Aerolineas Argentinas aircraft.

AA2000 initially reported 32 canceled departures, 40 canceled arrivals (6 by the low-cost company Flybondi and 6 by JetSmart), but after midday, the flag carrier clarified that, in fact, there were over 100 flights which could not depart.

The company explained that “starting at 3 pm, certain flights may be rescheduled. This could include the transfer of Aeroparque from Ezeiza.”

Aeroparque was notified of the cancellations. For example, Aerolineas Argentinas cancelled flights to Cordoba (7.10 and 7.40), Comodoro Rivadavia (9.10), Resistencia (10.25), Iguazu (11.5 and 13.35), and Bariloche (12.10).

Many of the domestic international flights, which were scheduled to arrive between Aeroparque’s hours of 7 to 8:30 pm had to be diverted. Aerolineas Argentina, Flybondi and Aerolineas Argentinas were among the flights that had to be diverted.

Currently, in Ezeiza most departures are delayed. Only one flight was cancelled, the level one scheduled to depart for Barcelona at 7.05 pm.

Telam received a message from AA2000 that they will resume normal operations throughout the day. However, they cautioned that “the scheduling is handled by each individual airline”, and the concessionaire “has no influence on how the airlines organize their flight schedules.”

Aeroparque suffered serious damage

Storms with winds up to 140 km/hr blew in around four o’clock this morning, causing serious damage. This was especially true on the runway, as planes were moved by the strong wind and metal sheets were broken. The storm caused damage to the runway area, where planes were displaced by wind and metal plates were blown off.

The storm’s violence left behind different remnants on the track. These included branches in different sizes, which were carried along by the strong wind.

The technical staff at the concessionaire carried out a thorough cleaning and damage-control operation. After that, operations could be resumed.

Social media users have shared videos that show the chaos at the Jorge Newbery Airport after the storm that struck the Costanera Norte region.

One of the films shows how the wind is moving an Aerolineas Argentinas aircraft that’s parked at the end of the runway. In another, a ladder used to ascend and descend the plane for passengers begins rolling down the runway. It does not hit the luggage cart until the wind hits it.

Several videos were taken of incidents that occurred not only outside but inside the terminal in Buenos Aires. The wind caused glass doors to open and close by themselves. The checking area had a lot of trash.

Aeropuertos 2001 confirmed in Aeroparque that the entire terminal has been damaged by strong winds, including broken glass. A part of the arrivals corridor in the international area was damaged, but this did not stop the operations. The ceiling of the pre-boarding domestic area was partially damaged near doors 10, 11, and 12. Two doors also were not functional. Roofs from several hangars have been blown away. The 16 parked aircraft were all damaged. The roof of the parking area on the 6th floor was damaged, and trees fell down along Costanera Avenue.

AA2000 is working with the commercial aviation industry to repair the damages caused by this storm.

The situation at the Ezeiza Ministerio Pintarini airport was better, as the number of flights cancelled was only four up until this morning. Also the effects of the storm were less severe than Aeroparque. It began operating normally at 8 am.

Ambulation of trees and floods in AMBA

Strong winds and storms in Buenos Aires caused trees to fall, streets to flood, roofs to blow off, and even destroyed a theatre. The greatest damage was caused in Bahia blanca by the collapse of the roof on a sports centre. Thirteen people were killed and many more seriously injured.

At least 13 Palermo residents were hurt when a building collapsed at an event held at the Hippodrome. Three more suffered minor injuries during GEBA’s Bresh Party. Around 20 ambulances arrived at the scene in Palermo around 4 am after the alerted emergency services of the collapse of posters and a tent.
