JFRD reported that the fire started in an attic shared by eight apartment buildings, and firefighters stopped it spreading.
Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department was called to Townsend Apartment Homes, Arlington Hills on Friday afternoon.
JFRD Capt. Eric Prosswimmer stated that crews “did a phenomenal job” in putting out the fire “before it completely destroyed all apartments in the building.”
The fire did not cause any injuries, but it forced 18 people to leave their homes – 16 adults and 2 children.
The crews evacuated all of the people from their apartments when they arrived.
Crews called in backup immediately, considering the fire to be a two-alarm situation.
Only two of the units suffered fire damage. Another two units were damaged by water.
The power is out in the whole building.
Bureau of Fire & Arson Investigations is investigating the cause of fire.
Prosswimmer stated that JFRD had “suspicions”, but would allow investigators to reach a conclusion.
The firefighter was commended: “You have a shared attic above these apartments and the fire just tears right through.” The firefighters acted quickly when they noticed the fire in the attic. They got to the scene before it spread. “Pretty incredible.”
Two other nearby buildings were also close to the fire, but it was prevented from spreading.
