After the flood waters have moved out to sea, the extent of damage done by the heavy rains last week to the Clanrye River Wall behind Newry Town Hall has become glaringly obvious. The wall was severely damaged on 31st October, Halloween after the water level in the river had been raised by a lot following an incessant night of rain. This followed a wet year that saw the soil saturated with large amounts of water.
Our video, which was posted on Facebook by Newry.ie at 10am 31st October shows that the wall had been breached earlier. The wall fell, allowing water to enter the Newry Canal directly from the River. This contributed to the rising waters that already began flooding Merchant’s Quay following the breaching of the sandbags on the Sugar Island pedestrian crosswalk at 7:30am. A tent was found at the scene of the collapse.
It is not accurate to say the Newry Canal burst it’s banks as many media outlets have reported. The water that flooded the Canal was actually the Clanrye River, a day before (before 7:30am Monday, 30th October), which overflowed the banks further along the towpath. The combination of heavy rain, the collapsed wall behind the Town Hall and incessant flooding caused unprecedented flooding on Sugar Island as well as Merchants Quay and Carnbane.
Newry.ie has asked the DfI whether the wall is under their care and, if it is, what they plan to do in the near future regarding the repair.
