News 5 reports that the homeowner has told them he does not intend to move.
Cleveland Heights, Ohio is looking at a solution for a problem that has plagued an owner of a home for many years. The city is offering to purchase a property that has been repeatedly damaged by cars at Taylor Road and Fairmount Boulevard.
John Gall has lived in Cleveland Heights since over 30 years, and in the house he currently lives in, Taylor Rd., he said that quaint Brick Home on Taylor Rd. is his favorite.
I like the place. “I love my neighborhood; I love my neighbor. “I’m established and I have relationships,” said he. Why would I want to move?
The long-time resident is not happy with the crashes that occur on his property. The problem has been ongoing since the guardrail on his tree lawn was removed 17 years ago.
I’ve been complaining for years, but it hasn’t changed. In their eyes I think I am the problem. “I’m the one who is at fault,” he replied.
News 5 reported on crashes in the house since 2012. News 5 investigators in 2021 highlighted Gall’s homemade barrier, and spray-painted signs saying, “Where is my guardrail?” This was after a car smashed into the corner and damaged the home for nearly $40,000.
Two of his cars were damaged in other crashes, and his garage was destroyed. His sense of security also suffered.
My girlfriend lives in Brecksville and refuses to visit me. “She doesn’t like it here and she won’t spend any time with us,” Gall explained.
The city will install several boulders on the lawn in 2022. They prevented several cars from colliding into his house this fall. Gall, however, said that he is concerned about liability for any injuries caused by these boulders. He also said the solution was not long-term.
Mike Thomas, director of communication and public outreach at Cleveland Heights, acknowledged that “it doesn’t mean the problem goes away.” The problem isn’t ours. It is up to us to try and find a way out.
Danny Williams, the city administrator, spoke to council members at a meeting on Monday about the possible next solution.
Williams stated during the meeting that “the one we are working on is starting the negotiation with the homeowner in order to suggest a sale of his property.”
The city still needs to get an appraiser’s opinion on the property, he said.
We would decide on what to do. Thomas added that “at least no one would be in the home who might be injured every time an accident occurs.”
Gall was skeptical about the value of an offer made by the city.
What’s the value? “To me, everything is worth it,” said he. They’ll have to do everything to get me to leave.
The speed limit was previously reduced from 35 to 25 miles per hour on Taylor Rd. Williams, however, said that the main cause of these crashes was illegal drivers speeding or fleeing the police.
Gall thinks the 3 way junction design is the bigger problem.
It’s true that there are a lot of reckless drivers. “But it is also the case,” he added, adding that he would like to see traffic flow improved, crosswalks placed, and barriers installed.
According to the city, reworking an intersection can be a long and intensive process. Thomas stated that previous conversations about this project had raised concerns over the potential impact of such a plan on nearby neighborhoods as well as a business district.
Gall has said that he will continue to push for solutions, and he does not intend to leave his house.
“I’m angry. “I’m really angry,” said he. We’ll have to see what happens, but I won’t give up.
