Although the nor’easter that hit Grand Strand on Sunday has passed, some residents still have to deal with damage and cleanup caused by heavy winds and rain.
The trees that lined the entrance to a River Oaks community were quickly the cause of major damage for one house, when the wind began to snap those trees and cause them to crash into their roofs and back windows.
Austin Staley, who lives in River Oaks, described the damage to his home. “They had the largest tree patch other than on the other side. They have a lot tall trees, but they are very thin. So when the wind came through, the tops snapped off the trees, as well as a large amount of debris. And honestly, their house was the first thing that everything hit. Their yard became littered by all the branches.”
Staley, who runs a company that specializes in home improvements, lives right down the street from homeowners whose houses were heavily damaged. He told the reporter, “I stopped by on my way to get ready for work and [the homeowner] had asked me if I would like to see it.”
So, he did. After assessing the situation, he got down to business and helped to repair some of the damages.
They had broken a back window. I bought some insulation board from Home Depot to cover the window. Of course, everything will be checked, but I said I’d help them clear the debris, then put it in my trailer. Staley said, “I’ve hauled trailer loads for the past two days.”
Staley has been volunteering his time for the past two days to help his neighbors. He’s been raking leaves, cutting branches, and clearing the yard and home.
