Authorities in Virginia reported Wednesday that a baby and dog both died from being locked in a vehicle for more than six hours. A woman was also taken into custody.

At a press conference, York-Poquoson sheriff Ron Montgomery revealed that police were dispatched to Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital at Newport News around 4:30 pm on Tuesday. A man had come to the hospital’s emergency room to say he was driving with a “deceased” child in his car.

Montgomery reported that emergency room staff found an 11-month old child’s corpse inside a bag of black plastic garbage in the hatchback. Myricalwicker was identified later as the child.

A police investigation revealed that Kristen Graham, a babysitter had taken care of the child. Graham, 40 years old, cared for the baby for two days. However, she would “take the child to the hospital for weeks on end” at other times. The mother of the child is an unidentified 17-year old woman from the area.

According to the investigation, Graham had received a call at 1 am on September 12 from a close friend in Newport News. Graham agreed to the request, placing the small dog and a child on the back seat of the vehicle. Montgomery stated that Graham drove to her friend’s house and “stayed for a period of time” after purchasing cigarettes at a 7/11 and buying a bottle apple juice. Around 8 am, Graham returned with her child and pet dog.

Montgomery stated that when Graham arrived home, he rolled down the windows, shut off the car and left his dog and child inside. Graham went to bed and was woken up at 2:30 pm by a telephone call.

Montgomery stated that she then “went out to check on the child who had died at this point,” Montgomery. Before being taken to hospital, the child was brought inside the home.

Montgomery confirmed that Graham had been arrested on her property Wednesday. She was charged with animal cruelty and felony child abuse, both of which are class 4 felonies. Documents from the court show that she remains in jail at Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.

Montgomery stated that there is a “very good chance” that the charges against this child could be upgraded into homicide after an autopsy has been completed.

Montgomery stated that these aren’t typical cases in Montgomery County. When you come across the loss of a child it impacts everyone. We all hug our children and grandkids more tightly after such a tragedy.

Montgomery didn’t mention explicitly whether heat was involved in the death of the child, but Tuesday the temperature reached 88 degrees in Newport News.

According to KidsandCars.org this is the second time in Virginia that a child has died in a car.
