Six people narrowly escaped being killed after the collapse of a venue in Ijero-Ekiti (the headquarters of Ijero Local Government Area, Ekiti State).

According to The Nation, the incident took place around 4:15 pm Saturday night.

The roof and walls of the building with its 250 residents receded during a reception for a funeral ceremony. Guests suffered varying degrees of injury.

The timely arrival of men from the Fire Services on the scene prevented any casualties. They rescued the victims and took them straight to the hospital.

The auditorium of the building and its surroundings was littered not only with wreckage but also spilled food served to guests. Broken bottles, men’s caps and female wigs, and shoes were scattered throughout.

An eyewitness described the event as follows: “A deep crack appeared on the wall during a reception for a funeral ceremony. The roof and Plaster of Paris (POP) collapsed and fell onto those seated in the auditorium.

This caused a mass stampede. In the stampede, many were injured and some of those inside suffered serious injuries. The Chairman of Local Government and Fire Service personnel were here with me to help rescue people from the rubbles.

The hospital immediately treated those who suffered serious injuries.

Biodun Oyebanji, the Governor of Ekiti, expressed his sympathy for this building collapse. He described it as sad and unfortunate.

On Sunday morning, Oyebanji and his deputy, Monisade (Mrs.) Afuye visited the building that collapsed, as well as the Ijero General Hospital, where some of the victims were treated. They expressed their grief over this incident.

Oyebanji instructed all government agencies to make sure that public buildings in this category are monitored and certified throughout their construction to prevent unwarranted deaths.

According to the Governor, the incident would have been avoided if government agencies had followed building specifications. He warned that a situation of this nature should not be repeated in the state.

Oyebanji said that the government will develop strategies for all local authorities to have Emergency Management Equipment to deal with any emergency situation.
