Most of the calls to Waycross Fire Department are about downed powerlines and trees. Roof of Brantley county school blown off by storm

Southeast Georgian communities clean up the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia on Wednesday.

The Waycross Fire Department in Ware County says that the majority of their service calls involve downed powerlines and trees.

First Coast News teams were driving around Ware County when they observed the large pine that had fallen, cutting into the dining room in front of a house and destroying the car owned by the homeowner on Euclid Ave. A tree fell on South Georgia State University’s campus and damaged the satellite dish that is located in front of their Education Building.

American Lube Fast, located on Memorial Drive in Waycross, was also damaged. Glass on the facade of the building was shattered, and there were chairs in the lobby on the grass. Business was closed on Wednesday. The intersections were lit up with traffic lights.

David Eddins, chief of Waycross Fire Department David Eddins said that the department is responding with extra personnel to all calls.

Eddins asked residents to have patience because the streets are likely to become a mess. “There will be debris to clean up, and mail delivery, and other services that we’re used to receiving in normal circumstances, could be affected by the weather conditions.

Eddins advises that if you find yourself in a longer wait than normal, it is best to leave the downed lines alone.

Eddins advised: “Assume every line you see, regardless of whether you believe it’s a cable or electrical line. Don’t touch them.” Leave things in their current location if you think that it is possible to clear the area.

The hurricane also caused the roof to come off a school building in Brantley county, Georgia, which housed classrooms for the sixth grade at Hoboken elementary School.

Kim Morgan, Superintendent of Brantley county Schools says that fortunately the school had been closed at the time the roof collapsed.

Brittany Beers, a mother of a young girl who attends YMCA in New York City, says that the school has suffered a lot since last month.

Beers stated, “I’m shocked. I am extremely shocked that it is Georgia.” I used to live Florida, and left Florida after the hurricane. Now I’m trying to rush to my home hoping it is fine.

Morgan said that there will not be any long-term school closures due to the damage. The affected classrooms will simply be moved.
