The Oklahoma State University Swim Club has returned to campus after a long hiatus. They are ready to introduce competitive swimming to OSU.
Students who are passionate about the sport of swimming, and want to bring back a community spirit and competitive atmosphere around it have brought back OSU’s swim club. The new OSU Swim Club hopes that it will attract more participants than in previous years, despite the fact it had been officially absent for one year.
Swimmers of all levels participated in the return of the swim club, including beginners and those with considerable experience. Avary, a Canadian international student, majoring in Child Care and Family Services, was a junior who stressed the inclusivity of the club.
Hickman stated that “everyone is welcoming and enthusiastic.” “There are some people competing who have not competed before.” “We care more about the fun of it than we do about excluding someone from our team just because they’re not experienced.”
OSU’s swimming club is a member of the Southwest Swim League, which includes College Club Swimming. The university competed in the NCAA but that was a long time ago. Oklahoma Christian University, Edmond is the only NCAA swimming team in Oklahoma. Oklahoma Baptist University used to have a swim team, but it was cut in 2021.
Shyanna Kuehn, the club’s president, said that OSU faced many obstacles when it came to bringing back its swim club.
Kuehn stated, “We would like to make people aware that we are back.” We’re back and want to remain here. “We’re here to compete, but we also want to highlight the importance of swimming.”
The Colvin Recreation Center, on campus, which used to be home to the Cowboy and Cowgirl Swim Teams, has had to shut down its indoor swimming pool in recent years due to age-related maintenance and repair issues. The pool was over 50 years of age when it started to degrade in 2018. This is because the air-handling unit had failed. In 2020, the Colvin was able to repair half, but another disaster occurred. The plumbing of the pool was severely damaged when a large pipe burst under it. The damage was done, even though no one was injured.
Todd Misener (assistant vice president for student affairs and chief wellbeing officer) said that the estimate was around $2 million. We don’t even have $2,000,000. “We didn’t even have $2 million back then. We don’t now.”
Misener stated that Colvin pools had a deficit between $200,000 and $300,000. In addition, only about 100 people per year swam indoors. The cost of building a new, completely indoor pool would be $15 million. Without a major donation, the money to do so is not available.
Misener stated, “I am a huge fan of the swimming club and I’m an advocate for all things aquatic.” “I approached the city, and we had an informal meeting to determine if the city would be willing to fund the construction of a swimming pool. We would then fund the operation of the pool, and make it available to community groups and schools. This was a win for everyone.
Misener stated that the Stillwater YMCA is currently completing its fundraising campaign for a new pool to be built on 12th Street.
The club will thrive despite its challenges including the closure of the indoor Colvin pool. Kuehn’s current search is for someone who has a passion for Oklahoma swimming to donate. The YMCA is the place where they host their home meets.
On Nov. 10, OSU will face off against the University of Oklahoma in a Bedlam match. The swimmers admit that the competition is nerve-racking, despite their excitement.
William “Brodie”, vice-president of the swimming club, said: “I have high expectations.” We may no longer have Bedlam Football after this season, but we hope to smash them every year in the swimming pool.
Kuehn stated that the OSU Swim Club was not only about competing; the club is about creating a community of support and promoting swimming’s benefits to all athletes.
Kuehn stated, “This is a great training for off-season.” It balances the lung capacity and gives you stability. Not just swimmers can benefit from it.
The team, despite the fact that the club is still looking for permanent housing and has just gotten back up on its feet, are becoming more excited about their future.
Shiloh pickering is an experienced and “super senior swimmer” from OSU. She said, “The swimming club will be what you want it to be.” If you want to try to make it to the Olympics or just get faster, there will be someone in the club who can help you, whether you are a novice or professional. This variety is great.
The club has been very welcoming and heartwarming.
