AFP journalists heard several explosions in the capital before dawn. Air raid sirens followed shortly after.
The Ukrainian air force claimed to have shot down all 10 missiles that were aimed at the city. According to the Ministry of Health, 53 people including two children had been injured.
The ministry said that the majority of injuries are caused by household objects, glass shards and shock waves as the missile debris falls in the eastern and southern areas of the city.
The strike on Wednesday, in which the most number of people were injured in recent months, is the second one in the past week.
Eight missiles heading for the capital have been shot down in a second attack that occurred overnight from Sunday to Monday.
The Kyiv Military Administration stated that “the enemy has used ballistic missiles”, adding that Russia is “intensifying its terror” of Kyiv.
Officials reported that nine Iranian Shahed-made drones were downed in Odesa’s southern port.
A journalist from AFP saw a huge hangar on the outskirts of Odesa’s port, where cars and trucks had been destroyed. The metal pieces of the roof had been lodged into the nearby branches.
Some cars inside the hangar had shrapnel-holes, others were burned out and some had been crushed when the roof fell. Several cars outside the hangar were damaged.
Nataliya Gumenyuk, a spokeswoman for the army, said that not all drones had been destroyed when they were brought down.
The destroyed hangar, she said, was not connected directly to the Odesa port, which Moscow has relentlessly attacked since summer.
Oleg Kiper, the regional chief of Oleg’s region in Russia, said that two employees at a vehicle repair shop were injured by one drone and “a building of port infrastructure was partly destroyed” by another.
The Russian defence ministry stated that the military had destroyed Ukrainian drone and ammunition sites but gave no further details.
The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky described Russia as “a shameful nation that fires missiles in the night and hits residential areas, schools, and energy installations during winter”.
Kyiv’s strikes come a day following a major hacking attack against the top telecoms provider in Ukraine, an attack that Ukrainian officials believe may have been perpetrated by Russian security forces.
In recent days, Russian forces also increased their attacks on the Ukrainian front lines in eastern and southern Ukraine. Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesperson, told the Izvestia daily that “Ukrainian troops are losing rapidly their positions.”
Zelensky had just returned from Washington, where he failed to break the blockage of a $60 billion aid package that was stuck in a divided Congress. He then travelled to Norway, a major donor.
After growing frustration, the Ukrainian leader tries to regain support from Ukraine’s friends.
He told reporters that the Ukraine could not win without any help after his talks with Norwegian Premier Jonas Gahr Store.
Joe Biden, who spoke alongside Zelensky on Tuesday at the White House, said “I won’t walk away from Ukraine.”
